The A-Rod saga continues
While A-Rod's rehabilitation continues, so does his apparently never-ending steroid saga. Major League Baseball is now looking into the allegations which are emerging from a soon to be released biography by Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts that he used steroids while in high school and also while he was with the Yankees. This contradicts his earlier claim that he only used steroids between 2001 and 2003 while with the Rangers. Unfortunately, it's not easy to dismiss these allegations as they would be consistent with who we know Alex to be and the decisions we know him to have made. This situation will only go from bad to worse if he struggles on the field when he returns. On the other hand, if the Yankees were to bring home a championship, all will be forgiven. The stakes are high and it's never boring in the Bronx.

The beginning of the end for the Rocket?
The FBI has now officially opened an inquiry into whether Roger Clemens lied when he told Congress that he had never taken steroids. This inquiry was initiated based on a request by the House Oversight Committee and, interestingly enough, the committee did not make the same request for Brian McNamee, Clemens' former trainer, who testified in front of Congress at the same hearing that Roger did indeed take steroids. It's not looking good at the moment for Roger. He hasn't been convicted or even officially accused. However the circumstances are not stacking up in his favor right now, and if ultimately he did take steroids, MLB should punish him to the full extent possible, including banning him from the Hall of Fame.

Clemens digging his hole deeper?
The Rocket may be in some serious trouble. After his recent congressional testimony, there are apparently enough of discrepancies between what he said he did and what the Mitchell Report alleged that he did that congress now feels the need to request that the Department of Justice get involved. This could be the beginning of the end for the Rocket. I hate to see it happen. He has been such a dominant pitcher and competitive personality for baseball over the last 25 years. It will be a shame to find out that he lied and used performance-enhancing drugs, and if that's the case, he deserves to have the book thrown at him. Baseball needs to restore its own integrity, even though it is a painful process.

Pettitte's admission
Only days after the Mitchell report was released and 20 current or former Yankees were on the list, the first has come forward with an admission. Andy Pettitte has confirmed that he used HGH for 2 days, with no results according to him. While I give him credit for coming forward, at this point he is still a cheater. No doubt this puts much more pressure on Clemens, who it is easy to assume is also guilty, to do the same. While I don't think the players on this list should be banned from baseball, I do believe two things have to happen. First, there must be testing from here on out. The integrity of the game is much more important than any individual player. Second, none of the players who are confirmed to have used illegal or banned substances should be in the Hall of Fame, including Clemens. No doubt that Roger was the best pitcher of the last 25 years. I honestly don't doubt that he could have achieved the same results had he never taken any such substances. However, it is all but certain that he did, and if confirmed, it raises legitimate questions about his numbers and potentially gave him an unfair advantage. It is a sad time for all of Major League Baseball. The strike in 1994 drove a lot of fans away. Players like Cal Ripken and his work ethic brought fans back to the game. Players like Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire brought fans back to the game with their amazing season in 1998. Now we look back and know that the McGwire/Sosa run was tainted by at least one and probably both players using illegal substances. And while it is not fun to point it out, the fact that some of these banned substances allow players to recover quicker, one can't help but wonder about Cal Ripken's consecutive games streak. It is a sad time for baseball.

Giambi off the hook....
Today Bud Selig announced that Jason Giambi will not suffer any consequences for his (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) theoretical use of performance-enhancing drugs, which has become simply a emphamism for steroids. All this aside, Giambi, just like Bonds, needs to have an asterik next to his name in the record books after he retires. Fair is fair. As for his future with the Yanks, I'd like to see him stick around, but not for his current price. He will be around for 2008 since his current contract is backloaded and he is currently making $23.4 million a year. I love his discipline at the plate and his combination of power and walks, but $23 million is way too much for a designated hitter.

Giambi wearing out his welcome
I like Jason Giambi. Although he's not much of a defensive first baseman, he can knock the ball out of the park and his good eye means he averages over 100 walks a season. That combination of power and patience translates into over 100 RBIs and over 100 runs each season - a very productive contribution to the offense. However, I think it may be time for him to go. It was only two years ago when Giambi held a press conference and apologized profusely for doing something that he wouldn't specifically admit - steroids. Yesterday it was reported that he failed an amphetamines test sometime within the last 12 months. I like the guy personally and as I said, he contributes his share to this team's offense. However, a cheater is a cheater and whether your last name is Bonds, Canseco, McGwire or Giambi, you need to suffer the consequences. Not to mention the $23 million he is getting paid this year would go a long way in bolstering their middle relief.
