Yanks re-sign Pettitte, 1-year, $11.75 million
The Yanks will be bringing Andy back for another year, with a new 1-year, $11.75 million deal. Unlike his 2009 contract which guaranteed him $5.5 million and with incentives paid him a total of $10.5 million. His $11.75 for 2010 has no incentives. Critics may say he is too old since he will turn 38 in June of 2010. They can also point to his not-so-impressive 4.16 ERA in the 2009 regular season. But it's hard to make the case that he didn't carry more than his weight in the postseason. Pettitte threw 5 games in the 2009 playoffs. He was 4 - 0 with a 3.52 ERA during that span. He's been reliable and a great presence in the clubhouse over the years. If the 2010 season were to begin today, he would be the #3 starter behind Burnett and Sabathia. Let's hope that when the 2010 season does begin, he's #4 and Halladay is somewhere in there too.

Another win and sole possession of first place, but at a cost
The Yanks dumped the Tribe behind 5+ shutout innings by Pettitte, but he had to leave the game in the 6th due to back stiffness. Fortunately, the bullpen picked up where Andy left off. Alfredo Aceves came in and threw 3 shutout innings (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K), followed by vintage Mariano, who got the save. This was the 58th (and MLB record-breaking) time that any starter and closer combined for a win and save.

As for other injury news, Posada came back and had a nice game to prove that he is healthy, and Melky is expected to return after the Cleveland series this weekend.

Today, CC returns to face his former team.

Not a walk-off, but still a win
The Yanks will not be setting any records with a fourth walk-off victory in a row. But they are celebrating their sixth win in a row. Teixeira continued on his tear, going 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 4 RBI by knocking 2 balls out of the Stadium. Pettitte gave up 4 runs and 12 hits in 6 2/3rds innings, but he still looked strong and fought hard. Not a bad run, but it needs to continue before they can seriously talk about being a playoff team.

Playing with a little heart
Last night's comeback was fun to watch. Pettitte labored through 5 2/3rds innings, and quickly went from being one out away from bringing his shutout into the 6th inning to leaving the game in the 6th and being charged with 5 runs. It was an abrupt collapse. But the offense had his back. They responded to being down by 6 runs in the 8th by scoring four runs and then followed with two runs in the 9th capped by a walk-off two-run single by Posada. Most impressive was the fact that the six runs were scored mostly by playing small ball - walks, timely singles and sacrifice flies and well-placed ground balls. I hope this is a sign of things to come.

Yanks win behind Andy's gem
Pettitte threw 8 shutout innings tonight and the offense managed to score (brace yourself) five runs on the way to a 5 - 0 victory over the Rays. Not bad considering Giambi, Matsui and Damon weren't in the lineup. Now they are 7 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay. Tomorrow we will see what Ponson can do.

Pettitte's admission
Only days after the Mitchell report was released and 20 current or former Yankees were on the list, the first has come forward with an admission. Andy Pettitte has confirmed that he used HGH for 2 days, with no results according to him. While I give him credit for coming forward, at this point he is still a cheater. No doubt this puts much more pressure on Clemens, who it is easy to assume is also guilty, to do the same. While I don't think the players on this list should be banned from baseball, I do believe two things have to happen. First, there must be testing from here on out. The integrity of the game is much more important than any individual player. Second, none of the players who are confirmed to have used illegal or banned substances should be in the Hall of Fame, including Clemens. No doubt that Roger was the best pitcher of the last 25 years. I honestly don't doubt that he could have achieved the same results had he never taken any such substances. However, it is all but certain that he did, and if confirmed, it raises legitimate questions about his numbers and potentially gave him an unfair advantage. It is a sad time for all of Major League Baseball. The strike in 1994 drove a lot of fans away. Players like Cal Ripken and his work ethic brought fans back to the game. Players like Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire brought fans back to the game with their amazing season in 1998. Now we look back and know that the McGwire/Sosa run was tainted by at least one and probably both players using illegal substances. And while it is not fun to point it out, the fact that some of these banned substances allow players to recover quicker, one can't help but wonder about Cal Ripken's consecutive games streak. It is a sad time for baseball.

Andy is coming back!
Part of the Yankees desperate need for starting pitching was eased when Andy Pettitte's agent announced that he will be returning to play for the Yanks in 2008! Now they are one deal with Minnesota away from making another strong run for their 27th championship.

Joe Girardi is turning his attention to Pettitte and speculating that he may me convinced to come back for another year.

Next Step: Pettitte
With Posada and Rivera now officially staying in the Bronx and A-Rod all but finished with his mega deal, the Yankees are taking the next logical step. They are turning their attention to Pettitte. With no worthwhile pitchers on the free agent market this offseason, they would be best advised to beg Andy to return and wait until the Twins decide if they are going to trade Santana. If they are going to take another real run at their twenty-seventh championship, they will need a significantly better rotation than they have had in the last seven years. Their starting rotation will have to be rebuilt either via home-grown talent, free-agent acquisitions, or the most likely scenario, all of the above.

Heading in the right direction, but not quite there yet.
OK, so the A-Rod is looking all but done and Posada is right behind him. That’s great news, but there’s still work to be done. Apparently Mariano Rivera is looking the the fact that Alex Rodriguez will, with the current he is in the verge of signing, be signed and playing in pinstripes until the ripe old age of 42. The three-year deal that the Yankees have extended to Mo will expire when he is 41. Apparently he wants a fourth guaranteed year. I say, give it to him. I would bet a paycheck or two that at the age of 42, Mo will still be very effective. Besides, with all that he has given to this team, would it really be the worst thing in the world to overpay him a bit if he did begin to lose his effectiveness? Unfortunately, the word is that the Yankees are not going to budge on the length of the contract and this word came from the Boss himself. Even if the Mo is signed, the Yanks have a lot of work ahead of them in the pitching department. I think they would go a long way in solving their problems if they were to convince Pettitte to come back for at least another year and find a way to trade for Johan Santana. Maybe send Melky or Cano their way, along with a mediocre prospect or two.

As goes Torre, so goes Posada, Mo, Pettitte and Clemens?
The New York Post is reporting that if this turns out to be Torre's last year (and it may very well be his last year if he doesn't bring a championship home), the Yankees may have difficulties bringing back Posada, Rivera, Pettitte and Clemens. I can live without Clemens. I realize he is a good friend to some of the guys like Pettitte, his competetive attitude is contagious and he serves as a mentor to some of the younger pitchers, but he is not worth $1 million per game to barely hold an ERA under 4. He isn't getting any younger and there is no reasonable argument to be made that his numbers are going to improve. However, it will be critical for the Yankees to resign Posada, Rivera and even Pettitte. The first two, Posada and Rivera, simply cannot be replaced. With all due respect to Jose Molina and Joba Chamberlain, the Yankees will lose games next year as a direct result of losing Rivera and/or Posada. They mean too much to the team. Pettitte is way too young to retire and too expereinced for the team to lose. He will be a key to any playoff run they make this year and for several years into the future. I have no idea if there is any truth to this story or the Post is just looking to stir the pot for a good story, but if it is true, the Boss better think twice about replacing Torre if they fail to win it all this year.

Today's game postponed due to rain

Andy Pettitte's first game back in pinstripes has been postponed due to rain. There has not been a makeup date set at this time, and Andy will not pitch tomorrow vs. the Rays at 7pm. The Yanks reshuffled their starting rotation so that Pettitte will pitch tomorrow, Moose, Igawa and Rasner will pitch the three games this weekend at the Stadium against the Orioles, and Pavano will pitch their first road game against Minnesota on Monday.

5 years, $20 million
It's being reported that Kei Igawa is now a Yankee. The Yanks are expected to officially announce the signing this week, along with Pettitte. Two left-handers in their rotation will surely bolster their performance. Now there is one last missing piece....

Andy is back in the Bronx
Andy Petitte and the Yanks came to an agreement yesterday on a 1-year, $16 million contract with one player option year. His record in New York (137 - 69) and the fact that he is, of course, a lefty will make him a welcome addition to a rotation. Assuming they sign Igawa, their only question mark for the rotation wil be their #5 slot. Having Andy back for the regular season is sweet enough, but don't forget - this is a guy with a lifetime 18-6 record in the postseason. And at this moment in time, the Yanks need people who can figure out how to win in October.

Signs of life in Petitte talks?
Accodring to Sportsillustrated.com, the Yankees and Andy Petitte are working on a 2-year, $13 million a year deal. If they can work this out and also work out a deal with Igawa who they already have won exclusive rights to negotiate with, they will be on their way to having a solid rotation which would look something like this:

  1. Wang
  2. Moose
  3. Petitte
  4. Igawa
  5. Randy, Pavano or any number of their prospects

No doubt they are going to need the pitching, though, especially when facing the Boston bats. Not only are the Manny Ramirez trade talks all but over, but Boston is acquiring J.D. Drew and Julio Lugo.

Shef out and Petitte in?
If I didn't know better, I would have said Steinbrenner was reading this blog and taking my advice. Two of the nine suggestions I made immediately after the Tigers eliminated the Yanks - dumping Sheffield and reacquiring Petitte - are now becoming hot rumors.

First, the Yankees have until November 5 to exercise their $13 million option to keep Gary Sheffield for another year. However, with Matsui, Damon and Abreu as the regular outfielders, and Cabrera and maybe even Bernie as a cheap option for backups, there suddenly seems to be no room for the aging Sheffield. Releasing him to the market would allow rivals like the Mets and Red Sox to go after him, and that would be worse than paying his salary and not playing him. So their other option becomes signing him and trading him, allowing them to get someone in return and also allowing them to ensure Gary isn't knocking doubles off the Green Monster next year (or at least not while wearing a Boston uniform). The problem with this option is that Shef is Shef, and nothing with him is easy. He has voiced his displeasure with this idea. He doesn't want to play 1st base with the Yanks, and that's about the only place they might have roof for him. He doesn't want to be traded for the remaining year on his contract. It should only get fun from here. His lightning-fast swing will be missed, but the clubhouse can do without his selfishness.

There are also rumors beginning to circulate that Andy Petitte, if he so chooses to continue playing next year, may be an option for the Yanks. As I said previously, what could be wrong with a left-handed starter who has proven himself in New York and in the playoffs?

The coaches will be shifting as bench coach Lee Mazzilli will reportedly be fired, Mattingly will move from hitting coach, and their AAA hitting coach, Kevin Long will move up and become the Yanks hitting coach. This makes sense as someone had to suffer the wrath of Steinbrenner and Mattingly is continuing to be groomed for the manager's job in the post-Torre era.
