Matsui close to deal with Angels |
| After seven years and one World Series MVP with the Yankees, it looks as if Hideki Matsui's time in New York is over. He is reportedly close to signing a 1-year, $6.5 million contract with the Angels. Despite his focus, dedication, unquestionable work ethic and consistent production when healthy, his bad knees have limited his role to that of a DH and as Brian Cashman has stated, the Yankees are looking for flexability. Derek Jeter once called Matsui the best teammate he ever had. That's impressive, considering both the source of the comment and the quality of players that Jeter has played with over the years. The man who didn't say much will be missed a whole lot - both on and off the field. Labels: Contract negotiations, Matsui, Outfield |

Matt Holiday would consider playing in New York |
It's very premature to begin any serious talks about trades for big name players, but it's not a stretch to point out the fact that the Yankees outfield is weak. Granted Nick Swisher has surpassed expectations. By season's end, he may prove to be a solid guy in the field as well as in the plate. Xavier Nady might post some decent numbers if he can return from the DL with no further issues. However, after those two, the performance drops off significantly. Brett Gardner has amazing speed and good plate discipline. Along with an accurate arm of average strength, he has a lot of potential. However, he's yet to prove he can hit at a major league level. Admittedly, he has not had enough time to develop yet. However, he won't survive until he can hit better than sub .250. Melky Cabrera doesn't appear to be able to grow past hitting for moderate average and minimal power. Johnny Damon is 35 and is not getting any older. His weak arm is a liability. Hideki Matsui's 4-year $52 million contract will expire after the 2009 season. So far, he has played in approximately half the games in the first three years of this contract. He's still struggling with his knee having surgery, and this season he appears to be relegated to DH duties when he does play. These are not the pieces that come together to make a strong outfield, either on the field or at the plate.
This is why the idea of Matt Holiday is intriguing. The 29-year-old left fielder has a .318 average and 128 homers in about 5 years of professional service. Defensively, his range is good and his overall fielding has been dramatically improving. His current contract with the Athletics expires this year and he has recently mentioned the temptation of being able to play in the Bronx.Labels: Damon, Gardner, Holiday, Matsui, Nady, Outfield, Swisher, Trade |

Awake, but for how long? |
| Brett Gardner's hit in the bottom of the 13th inning yesterday gave the Yankees a rare but much needed win after a stretch when the they won only 6 of their previous 19 games. Despite the win, the offense was still sparse, with only three runs being scored in the 13 inning game. Still, they find themselves 9.5 games behind division-leading Tampa and 6 behind Boston, who is on top of the wild card standings at the moment. Obviously, any hopes of a semi-miracle comeback rest fully upon the ability of the offense coming out from wherever they have been hiding and showing up consistently. Today's explosion is hopefully a sign of things to come. After scoring 15 runs against Kansas City today, for one game they demonstrated what their offense has been capable of all season. Adding to the good news, it looks as if Matsui will finally return to the lineup on Tuesday. The return of his bat will be welcome. While pitching has been solid overall, the return of Joba will also be great news. But at the end of the day, the Yanks have a tough schedule for the rest of the season, and a steep hill to climb. Matsui improving |
| Matsui took 45 swings off a tee in the batting cage yesterday, which is obviously a good sign. This is the same team that has only scored more than 5 runs in a game three times in the last 18 games. Not exactly what you'd expect out of a 9-man lineup that cost more than most entire 25-man rosters. Bret Gardner has done a solid job filling in for Hideki, but it's time to get his bat back in the lineup. Labels: Gardner, Injuries, Matsui, offensive woes |

Yanks shopping Matsui |
| I think I am really starting to like the direction the Yankees are going, especailly in the long term. The latest rumors have them shopping Hideki Matsui to the Giants for young pitching. Don't get me wrong. I really like Hideki. I love his work ethic and his modesty. He has power and hits for average and plays a decent outfield. However, the Yanks are heavy on bats and light on pitching and I like any idea of restoring the balance. Labels: Matsui, Pitching, Trade |

A-Rod talks still looking good, and maybe Mike owell too |
| ESPN.com is now reporting that A-Rod and the Yanks are getting ever closer to 10-years/$270 million agreement. That may lead some to believe that the Yanks would surely back off their recent aggressive pursuit of Boston's WS MVP, Mike Lowell, since he also plays 3rd base. However, there are reports that the Yanks are still in discussions with Lowell's agents and they are talking about bringing him to the Bronx to play 1st base. Finally, Matsui came out of knee surgery yesterday with no complications or problems and is expected to begin rehab soon and remain on schedule to be ready for the beginning of the 2008 season. For those of you who are paying attention, there is an extra player in there. Abreu's option was picked up so he could play right. Melky will be playing center with Damon backing him up. Damon will also be putting a lot of time in at left field, with Matsui also putting time in left and as DH. If Lowell does get signed to play first, that leaves Jason Giambi to play the occasional first base and be a part-time DH. $21 million is a lot for an occasional first baseman and a part-time DH. Barring a major injury or some unforeseen circumstances, I don't see the Yankees keeping Giambi on past 2008, regardless of Mike Lowell's whereabouts. Joe answers the Boss |
| Less than a week after George Steinbrenner released a statement regarding his lack of satisfaction with the Yankees performance this year so far, Joe has answered him. Five victories in six games is his response, after today's win over Seattle. Adding to the fun was the news of Clemens returning to the Bronx. And on top of all that, Matsui collected his 2000th professional hit. I'm still not sure how I feel about Clemens. As I've mentioned before, his previous results in pinstripes were mediocre. However, with Matt DeSalvo set to start tomorrow's game against the Mariners, the Yankees will become the first team in baseball history to use ten different starting pitchers in the first thirty games of the season. They need stability. Hopefully the Rocket will deliver. Labels: Clemens, Matsui, The Boss, Torre, Winning |
