Chamberlain arrested for DUI |
| Joba Chamberlain was arrested yesterday for driving under the influence of alcohol and having an open container in his car. Hank Steinbrenner spoke out in support of him stating that he will give Joba a second chance. This came shortly after Steinbrenner stated that Joba will start next year, a decision that I think is completely wrong for a variety of reasons. "It's getting ridiculous" |
| Hank Steinbrenner has spoken, and like his dad, he has a way of getting straight to the point with few words and a demanding tone. "We've got to start hitting. It's getting ridiculous. They've got to start waking up. They've shown in flashes what they can still do.", Steinbrenner said today. He is absolutely right. The last two nights, the Yankees have spoiled very solid performances by Moose and Chamberlain by struggling at the plate. These two games are indicative of their offense in recent weeks. They've scored 7 runs in the last 4 games and 3 runs or less in 7 of the last 12 games. This isn't how a lineup that costs more than most 25-man rosters should perform, and therefore Hank has a good point. No matter what kind of pitching they can develop, if they can't score runs, they will not have a long October. Labels: Hank, Offense, Payroll |

Hank speaks up |
| George Steinbrenner has earned the reputation for being outspoken over the years, and judging by his sons, it runs in the family. Hank Steinbrenner was quoted in an interview today as saying, among other things, that the Yankees need to earn their paychecks. I don't blame him one bit. Take the last two days, for example. Not only have they have lost their last two games against the Tampa Bay Rays and two young starting pitchers with career ERAs of 4.35 and 5.31, but they have scored 2 runs in the last 20 innings. Did I mention that their starting lineup in both games (Damon, Jeter, Abreu, Matsui, Giambi, Cabrera, Cano, Molina and Gonzales) is making a combined $92,364,771.00 in 2008, and that's not even counting Alberto Gonzales salary, because I can't find any information on it? Hank has a point. If your $90+ million lineup can't score more than 2 runs against a lousy and two sub-par pitchers in 20 innings, there is a problem. You can argue that they are slumping, and I'd agree that they are, but this isn't the first time this season that this lineup didn't show up, and it won't be the last. Hank Steinbrenner's latest comments: "Red Sox Nation? What a bunch of [expletive] that is. That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans. Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order."

Hank ready to pull out of Santana competetion? |
| Hank Steinbrenner, who has only recently inherited day-to-day operational management duties of the Yankees from his father, is already establishing himself as a chip off the old block. He is certainly part of the reason Joe Torre was given a less-than-generous offer and decided to seek employment elsewhere. He was vocally supportive of the Yankees hard line against Alex Rodriguez and eventually won the staring contest with Scott Boras. Now, it seems he has learned from the mistakes of the past and is demonstrating some of the stubbornness that has become a trademark Steinbrenner trait as he appears to be ready to draw the line with the Johan Santana trade talks and possibly withdraw all offers. Tonight may be the night that the Yankees pull out of Santana trade talks, weary that they are being drawn into a bidding war with Boston. No doubt that Andy Pettitte's decision to put the pinstripes on for one more year in 2008 has something to do with this, as suddenly, the Yanks are slightly less desperate for pitching. However, I'm not sure why Hank would be so quick to pull out, as if Boston does eventually get Santana (and the very thought of Beckett, Santana and Dice-K in the same rotation makes me cringe), it can only be in the Yanks best interest if they are forced to give up as much talent as humanly possible. However, this move makes sense as Hank may very well believe that New York is still in the hunt and he doesn't want to sell the farm, excuse the pun. We may just learn more in the next few days, but in any case, so far, I am definitely becoming a fan of Hank Steinbrenner. Labels: Boston, Hank, Pitching, Santana, The right thing to do |
