The kids come through |
After pitching a gem during his first game back in the big leagues earlier this year, Phil Hughes followed with a mediocre (at best) start and a total disaster. Last night he struggled and labored in each inning and his numbers were not exactly stellar (5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 HR) but on the positive side, he fought through a lot of tough situations where he could have potentially been knocked out of the game earlier. That might be a positive sign.
The real fun began when Brett Gardner's inside-the-park home run in the 7th inning broke up what was a very frustrating offensive game for the Yanks where they had left 13 runners on base. Going into the bottom of the 9th, down 4 to 2, Gardner's bat and feet once again helped when he led off with a triple. After a Teixeira single and a walk to A-Rod, Matsui struck out and Swisher advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd with a ground out. With the tying run on 3rd and winning run on 2nd, Robinson Cano was intentionally walked to load the bases for Melky. Cabrera made Minnesota pay for that decision with a walk-off, two-run single. It was a lot of fun to watch, but it doesn't matter if the magic doesn't continue.Labels: Cabrera, comeback, Gardner, Hughes |

Matt Holiday would consider playing in New York |
It's very premature to begin any serious talks about trades for big name players, but it's not a stretch to point out the fact that the Yankees outfield is weak. Granted Nick Swisher has surpassed expectations. By season's end, he may prove to be a solid guy in the field as well as in the plate. Xavier Nady might post some decent numbers if he can return from the DL with no further issues. However, after those two, the performance drops off significantly. Brett Gardner has amazing speed and good plate discipline. Along with an accurate arm of average strength, he has a lot of potential. However, he's yet to prove he can hit at a major league level. Admittedly, he has not had enough time to develop yet. However, he won't survive until he can hit better than sub .250. Melky Cabrera doesn't appear to be able to grow past hitting for moderate average and minimal power. Johnny Damon is 35 and is not getting any older. His weak arm is a liability. Hideki Matsui's 4-year $52 million contract will expire after the 2009 season. So far, he has played in approximately half the games in the first three years of this contract. He's still struggling with his knee having surgery, and this season he appears to be relegated to DH duties when he does play. These are not the pieces that come together to make a strong outfield, either on the field or at the plate.
This is why the idea of Matt Holiday is intriguing. The 29-year-old left fielder has a .318 average and 128 homers in about 5 years of professional service. Defensively, his range is good and his overall fielding has been dramatically improving. His current contract with the Athletics expires this year and he has recently mentioned the temptation of being able to play in the Bronx.Labels: Damon, Gardner, Holiday, Matsui, Nady, Outfield, Swisher, Trade |

Awake, but for how long? |
| Brett Gardner's hit in the bottom of the 13th inning yesterday gave the Yankees a rare but much needed win after a stretch when the they won only 6 of their previous 19 games. Despite the win, the offense was still sparse, with only three runs being scored in the 13 inning game. Still, they find themselves 9.5 games behind division-leading Tampa and 6 behind Boston, who is on top of the wild card standings at the moment. Obviously, any hopes of a semi-miracle comeback rest fully upon the ability of the offense coming out from wherever they have been hiding and showing up consistently. Today's explosion is hopefully a sign of things to come. After scoring 15 runs against Kansas City today, for one game they demonstrated what their offense has been capable of all season. Adding to the good news, it looks as if Matsui will finally return to the lineup on Tuesday. The return of his bat will be welcome. While pitching has been solid overall, the return of Joba will also be great news. But at the end of the day, the Yanks have a tough schedule for the rest of the season, and a steep hill to climb. Roster moves, potential trades |
In order to make way for newly-acquired Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte, the Yanks made a few moves today. Nady's presence means too many outfielders, so Brett Gardner was optioned to AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Latroy Hawkins was designated for assignment to make room for Marte. In another long-overdue move, Kei Igawa was outrighted to the minors today.
There is increasing talk about the Yankees getting Jarrod Washburn from the Mariners. I would caution anyone about getting excited about Washburn. With the exception of a few seasons, the 33-year old lefty has had a noticeably unremarkable career. He has a lifetime ERA of 4.12 and a record of 97 and 95, and has not had a respectable season since he was 8 and 8 with a 3.20 ERA in 2005 with Anaheim. Rumors are that the Yanks will basically be allowing Seattle to dump Washburn's contract off and therefore will only give them a low-level prospect in return. Washburn will obviously be a #5 starter is he is acquired.
Much more interesting but significantly less discussed is the remote possibility that the Yanks trade for Roy Halladay. There has been speculation that Halladay will be traded, and despite Toronto's denials, he apparently is desperate to win a world championship and is not oblivious to the fact that as long as he is in Toronto, that would be a long shot.Labels: Gardner, Halladay, Hawkins, Igawa, Marte, Nady, Pitching, Rotation, Washburn |

Matsui improving |
| Matsui took 45 swings off a tee in the batting cage yesterday, which is obviously a good sign. This is the same team that has only scored more than 5 runs in a game three times in the last 18 games. Not exactly what you'd expect out of a 9-man lineup that cost more than most entire 25-man rosters.
