Another win and sole possession of first place, but at a cost

The Yanks dumped the Tribe behind 5+ shutout innings by Pettitte, but he had to leave the game in the 6th due to back stiffness. Fortunately, the bullpen picked up where Andy left off. Alfredo Aceves came in and threw 3 shutout innings (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K), followed by vintage Mariano, who got the save. This was the 58th (and MLB record-breaking) time that any starter and closer combined for a win and save.

As for other injury news, Posada came back and had a nice game to prove that he is healthy, and Melky is expected to return after the Cleveland series this weekend.

Today, CC returns to face his former team.

More ups than downs

After all the hype of the reunion of Joba Chamberlain and Aubrey Huff, it amounted to nothing after Chamberlain was knocked out of the game by an Adam Jones line drive last night. Chamberlain's injury, for however long it lasts, might just be balanced out by the return of Wang, who will be working out of the bullpen for the time being. And when everything is said and done, the Yanks have a 9-game winning streak.

Football coming back to Yankee Stadium?

The old Yankee Stadium was chick full of history. Obviously, there were more baseball moments than you can count. World Series heroics such as Reggie Jackson's three home runs in one game, perfect games by David Cone and David Wells, a farewell speech by Lou Gehrig, a called shot by the babe, and back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back World Series victories from 1949 - 1953, just to name a few. Even historic non-baseball events were held there, including a visit by the pope, boxing matches, soccer games, college and professional football games and concerts. With the new stadium opening up this year, part of that old tradition may be coming back. There is talk about Notre Dame playing football at the new Yankee Stadium, and while nothing has been finalized, Stadium officials have indicated they are open to the possibility.

Playing like Yankees

Tonight the Yanks played like you'd expect them to play - they manhandled a clearly inferior team. If this was the Yankees of only two weeks ago, their bats would have struggled against sub-par pitching and their pitchers would have been knocked around. But CC Sabathia cruised through 7 innings to his fourth win and the offense exploded in the 7th inning for 7 runs. With their 7th run in a row, they moved to 5 games over .500. Adding to the good news is the return of Brian Bruney from the DL. He threw an inning (15 pitches, 10 strikes, 0 hits, 0 walks, 1 K) and will be a welcome addition to the bullpen.

Finally, for anyone keeping track, since the Carlos Gomez incident on Friday night, Teixeira is 8 for 16, with 6 runs, 11 RBI, 3 hr and 2 BB. Not a bad streak.

Not a walk-off, but still a win

The Yanks will not be setting any records with a fourth walk-off victory in a row. But they are celebrating their sixth win in a row. Teixeira continued on his tear, going 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 4 RBI by knocking 2 balls out of the Stadium. Pettitte gave up 4 runs and 12 hits in 6 2/3rds innings, but he still looked strong and fought hard. Not a bad run, but it needs to continue before they can seriously talk about being a playoff team.

Because two just isn't enough

What could the Yanks do to top the last two games which abruptly ended with a walk-off single and a walk-off homer? Follow up with another walk-off homer. Thank you, Johnny Damon. It's been a long time (37 seasons to be exact) since the Yanks won three games in a row with walk-off hits. The new Yankee Stadium may just have brought the old ghosts with it.

And in other good news, Wang is apparently making progress in AAA.

Two days, two walk-offs

Melky Cabrera's two-run, walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on Friday was followed by even more late-inning heroics on Saturday. Alex Rodriguez drove a 2-run homer over the left-field fence in the bottom of the 11th last night for the second walk-off in as many nights. And if nobody noticed, Mark Teixeira may have received the spark he needed when he and Carlos Gomez got into heated argument in the 8th inning of Friday's game. The dispute was over Gomez running on the infleld grass towards first base twice, which almost caused a collission the second time he did it. Since the incident, Teixeira is 5 for 5 with 3 runs, 5 RBIs and a walk. Not bad, but they need to keep it up.

The kids come through

After pitching a gem during his first game back in the big leagues earlier this year, Phil Hughes followed with a mediocre (at best) start and a total disaster. Last night he struggled and labored in each inning and his numbers were not exactly stellar (5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 HR) but on the positive side, he fought through a lot of tough situations where he could have potentially been knocked out of the game earlier. That might be a positive sign.

The real fun began when Brett Gardner's inside-the-park home run in the 7th inning broke up what was a very frustrating offensive game for the Yanks where they had left 13 runners on base. Going into the bottom of the 9th, down 4 to 2, Gardner's bat and feet once again helped when he led off with a triple. After a Teixeira single and a walk to A-Rod, Matsui struck out and Swisher advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd with a ground out. With the tying run on 3rd and winning run on 2nd, Robinson Cano was intentionally walked to load the bases for Melky. Cabrera made Minnesota pay for that decision with a walk-off, two-run single. It was a lot of fun to watch, but it doesn't matter if the magic doesn't continue.

A-Rod is back with a boom

Alex Rodriguez sent the first pitch he saw from Jeremy Guthrie in his first at-bat of the season over the fence to break the game open 3 - 0. Backed up by a 4-hit, complete game shutout by CC Sabathia, the Yanks stopped their 5-game losing streak. A-Rod's presence was much needed in a lineup that just recently added Posada to a DL that is already getting crowded and CC picked a perfect time to throw a gem with a pitching staff that has struggled recently. Let's just hope it continues.

Wang's feet might be the problem

The Yankees believe that Chien-Ming Wang's foot might be the cause of his early pitching struggles this season. This would mean it's a carryover from his injury last year. This isn't good news for a starting rotation that has already seen more than its share of struggles only one month into the season.

The injuries continue...

With tendinitis in his pitching arm, Damaso Marte was sent to the 15-day DL today retroactive to April 26. He will be temporarily replaced by Anthony Clagett.

The A-Rod saga continues

While A-Rod's rehabilitation continues, so does his apparently never-ending steroid saga. Major League Baseball is now looking into the allegations which are emerging from a soon to be released biography by Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts that he used steroids while in high school and also while he was with the Yankees. This contradicts his earlier claim that he only used steroids between 2001 and 2003 while with the Rangers. Unfortunately, it's not easy to dismiss these allegations as they would be consistent with who we know Alex to be and the decisions we know him to have made. This situation will only go from bad to worse if he struggles on the field when he returns. On the other hand, if the Yankees were to bring home a championship, all will be forgiven. The stakes are high and it's never boring in the Bronx.

Playing with a little heart

Last night's comeback was fun to watch. Pettitte labored through 5 2/3rds innings, and quickly went from being one out away from bringing his shutout into the 6th inning to leaving the game in the 6th and being charged with 5 runs. It was an abrupt collapse. But the offense had his back. They responded to being down by 6 runs in the 8th by scoring four runs and then followed with two runs in the 9th capped by a walk-off two-run single by Posada. Most impressive was the fact that the six runs were scored mostly by playing small ball - walks, timely singles and sacrifice flies and well-placed ground balls. I hope this is a sign of things to come.
