Hank telling it like it is
Hank Steinbrenner's latest comments: "Red Sox Nation? What a bunch of [expletive] that is. That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans. Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order."

Amen, brother.

The beginning of the end for the Rocket?
The FBI has now officially opened an inquiry into whether Roger Clemens lied when he told Congress that he had never taken steroids. This inquiry was initiated based on a request by the House Oversight Committee and, interestingly enough, the committee did not make the same request for Brian McNamee, Clemens' former trainer, who testified in front of Congress at the same hearing that Roger did indeed take steroids. It's not looking good at the moment for Roger. He hasn't been convicted or even officially accused. However the circumstances are not stacking up in his favor right now, and if ultimately he did take steroids, MLB should punish him to the full extent possible, including banning him from the Hall of Fame.

Clemens digging his hole deeper?
The Rocket may be in some serious trouble. After his recent congressional testimony, there are apparently enough of discrepancies between what he said he did and what the Mitchell Report alleged that he did that congress now feels the need to request that the Department of Justice get involved. This could be the beginning of the end for the Rocket. I hate to see it happen. He has been such a dominant pitcher and competitive personality for baseball over the last 25 years. It will be a shame to find out that he lied and used performance-enhancing drugs, and if that's the case, he deserves to have the book thrown at him. Baseball needs to restore its own integrity, even though it is a painful process.

Cuba's future and it's effect on Major League Baseball
While this article isn't specifically about the Yankees, it's an interesting read nonetheless about all the interesting possibilities that could come about from an improved relationship between Washington DC and Havana now that Castro has officially stepped down. With all the MLB talent that comes out of the Caribbean, this can only be a good thing. Imagine the Yankees flying down to Cuba for a three game series against a major league team. This can only be good news.

A good investment
Francisco Rodriguez is only 26 years old and he already has 132 career saves with a lifetime 2.37 ERA. Now he is saying that he expects to become a free agent after 2008. Yes it's a bit premature to start speculating, but the Yanks will be dumping some big contracts after this coming season (Giambi and Moose) and will have some money to spare. How sweet would it be to have Joba and F-Rod fighting as a set-up man and closer (pick which is which)?

Cano deal likely finalized tomorrow
Robinson Cano and the Yankees are on the verge of finalizing the 4-year/$30 million contract that they agreed to a few weeks ago. This will maintain one of the best middle infields in the game and allow the Yanks to focus on their biggest weakness - pitching.

Trouble at home for Donnie Baseball
A few weeks ago, Don Mattingly made a decision, along with the approval of the Dodgers, to move from bench coach to special assignment coach in order to deal with personal issues with his family. There were no more details provided. Now we have some additional clues. His relationship with his wife has gone sour and their marriage is on the rocks.

Santana race over. Winner: Mets
It's all but written in stone: Johan Santana will be coming to New York next year. But he will be landing in Queens and not the Bronx. This acquisition will cost the Mets four prospects and $137.5 million over 6-years. I think this is the best thing that could have happened for the Yanks. They did not have to give up any serious prospects and they will not have to face Johan in a Boston uniform. I think he would have been a much smarter acquisition for Boston. Just imagine Johan and Dice-K fighting over who will be #2 and who will be #3 behind Josh beckett! Beckett is already lights-out. If they had a 2-3 of Santana and Matsuzaka, they would be planning where to hang their 2008 World Series Championship banner as I type this. Since the Yanks don't currently have a lights-out starter (Chamberlain has yet to prove to be lights-out as a starter and I firmly believe he should be in the bullpen as the heir-apparent closer, waiting for Mo to retire), they need to focus on acquiring such a caliber pitcher who can lead them in the postseason. Don't misunderstand me. Santana is very good, but there is a difference between very good and lights-out. The Yankees, if they are going to trade prospects for a pitcher, need to find someone who is lights out.
